Mayer was nominated by Democrats Tuesday night to run for the state senate seat in the 37th district recently vacated by George Latimer, who was elected Westchester County Executive. A date for a special election has not yet been
A Yonkers resident who represents the 90th district, Mayer won the nomination over West Harrison resident Mark Jaffe, teacher Kat Brezler, and Bedford Supervisor Chris Burdick. Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano dropped out before a nominee was chosen.
"Now, more than ever before, we need united and strong progressive leadership in Albany," Mayer said. "We cannot let the bigoted and hate-filled leadership in Washington take hold in Westchester. Democrats will continue to come together and rise up against those who try to use fear and hatred to undermine our unity."
Sarmad Khojasteh, a Bedford attorney is the only Republican who has entered the race. Khojasteh said an Albany insider is not the answer for the seat.
"The people of the 37th Senate District need an independent-minded, practical problem solver who will provide bipartisan, innovative solutions to address the issues faced by Westchester's working families," Khojasteh said.
"I look forward to a spirited campaign with Assemblymember Mayer that is focused on the issues and each of our proposed solutions, background and experience,” Khojasteh said.
The 37th Senate District covers the cities of New Rochelle, Rye, White Plains, Yonkers and the towns of Bedford, Harrison, Mamaroneck, North Castle, Rye, Eastchester.
